Tip 01
Don't set the hook
Circle hooks find the corner of the mouth on their own. Reel down, lift steady — and let physics do the work. Yanking pulls the hook free.
Tip 02
Match the rig to the bait
A 7/0 hook in a small pilchard is overkill. A 5/0 hook in a 10-inch mullet is a missed opportunity. Hook should clear the bait's natural width.
Tip 03
Check your leader after every fish
Even 80 lb fluoro abrades on a tarpon's gill plate or a snook's jaw. Run two fingers down the leader after every fight — if you feel a nick, retie.

Are the rigs pre-tied and ready to fish?
Yes. Every BlacktipH live bait rig and shark rig comes hand-tied, snelled, and packaged ready to clip onto your main line and start fishing. No tying knots in the dark or learning to snell on the boat.
What hook size should I use for tarpon?
Our recommendation: 7/0 Mustad® circle (Medium Live Bait Rig) for tarpon up to ~125 lb on live mullet, threadfin, or pinfish. Step up to the 10/0 (Large rig) if you're targeting trophy fish over 150 lb or live-baiting with crabs and bigger baitfish offshore.
Will the leader hold up to a 400-lb shark?
The Heavy-Duty Shark Rig is built around 400 lb monofilament leader paired with a steel cable bite leader specifically because mono alone won't survive a shark's teeth. The combination handles bulls, blacktips, hammerheads, and lemons. We use the same rig on our YouTube shark-from-the-beach episodes.
What does "snelled" mean and why does it matter?
A snelled hook has the leader tied directly to the hook shank using a wrapped knot, not a standard knot through the eye. The result: straight-line tension when a fish runs, better hook-set angle, and dramatically improved hook retention. Every BlacktipH live bait rig is snelled.
Can I use these inshore as well as offshore?
Yes — the Small (5/0) and Medium (7/0) rigs are designed exactly for the inshore-to-nearshore crossover: snook, redfish, tarpon, kingfish, snapper. The Large (10/0) is more offshore-focused but you can absolutely fish it inshore for trophy fish.
Why circle hooks instead of J-hooks?
Three reasons: (1) Higher hookup-to-landing ratio when you don't yank — the hook finds the corner of the mouth. (2) Better for catch-and-release because the hook rarely gut-hooks the fish. (3) Required by law for many Florida species, including tarpon and reef fish, in certain situations. We use them because they work.
How is BlacktipH × Mustad different from a generic rig at the bait shop?
Three things: (1) Mustad® Ultra-Point hooks (most generic rigs use unbranded budget hooks that bend on the second fish). (2) Premium fluorocarbon leader (most cheap rigs use stiff mono). (3) Hand-tied snells (most generic rigs use cheap quick-snell crimps that fail under load). We built the rig for the fight, not the price tag.
